Edo State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Paul Ohonbamu, has accused the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, of flouting security protocols during a recent visit to Edo State and displaying a history of disregard for lawful conduct.
Ohonbamu referenced a 2013 incident when Obi, as Anambra State governor, allegedly detained former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai for 48 hours.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Monday, Ohonbamu criticized Obi’s actions, stating, “Peter Obi is well aware of standard protocols, having enforced them ruthlessly as governor.
“El-Rufai himself confirmed being detained for 48 hours in 2013—an act that wasn’t just an overreach but a clear misuse of authority.”
Ohonbamu dismissed claims by Obi’s supporters, known as “Obidients,” that recent remarks by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo constituted a threat.
He clarified, “The governor’s statement was not a threat but a call for Obi to inform the state government ahead of future visits to ensure proper security measures.
“If anything goes wrong, the state bears the responsibility.”
The commissioner further noted that Obi’s visit to Edo on July 7 violated a police advisory against public gatherings.
“Other politicians touring states adhere to security protocols—why does Obi act differently?”
Ohonbamu questioned, labeling the controversy stirred by Obi’s supporters as politically driven.
