Dangote Petroleum Refinery
Lagos State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to supply crude oil to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in naira to reduce fuel costs and bolster local refining.
During a Tuesday visit to the refinery and Dangote Fertiliser Ltd. by NLC officials and members of the Labour Writers Association of Nigeria (LAWAN), Lagos NLC Chairperson Funmi Sesi emphasized the need for this policy shift.
“Why is Dangote still importing crude or paying in dollars for locally produced crude when Nigeria has abundant reserves?” Sesi questioned.
“Selling crude to Dangote in naira would lower operational costs and sustainably reduce fuel prices for Nigerians.”
Sesi praised the Dangote Group for its transformative impact, describing the refinery and fertiliser plant as “enormous and impressive” national assets that bridge Nigeria’s fuel supply gap, create jobs, and drive industrial growth.
“These projects are delivering measurable benefits, improving product availability, and advancing Nigeria’s industrialisation,” she said.
Highlighting the refinery’s role in stabilizing fuel prices post-subsidy removal, Sesi noted, “Dangote’s operations have significantly lowered the cost of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and other refined products, showcasing private sector leadership.”
She also commended the refinery’s 650,000-barrel daily capacity, capable of serving Nigeria and West Africa, and its production of Euro-5-compliant fuel with low sulphur content, which meets global environmental standards.
“This is a Nigerian company producing at world-class standards, elevating our global reputation,” she added.
Sesi further lauded Dangote Fertiliser Company’s international exports, urging government support to enhance food security and reduce reliance on imported agricultural inputs.
Devakumar Edwin, Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries, outlined the refinery’s efforts to end Nigeria’s dependence on imported refined products.
He announced plans to deploy 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks for nationwide product distribution.
“This fleet will reduce logistics costs, a key factor in pump prices, ensuring the benefits ofdomestic refining reach consumers,” Edwin stated.
He emphasized that the CNG trucks, which are cheaper to operate and environmentally friendly, aim to improve distribution efficiency without displacing existing operators.
