Speaker of House of Representatives, Rep. Tajudeen Abbas
House of Representatives has unequivocally reaffirmed its support for Speaker Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, dismissing rumors of an impeachment plot as baseless and misleading.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, Deputy Spokesperson Rep. Philip Agbese praised Abbas’ leadership, stating, “The confidence of members in Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen is unwavering and non-negotiable.”
Agbese highlighted the Speaker’s commitment to fairness, inclusivity, and members’ welfare, describing him as a leader who “has shown unmatched dedication to promoting the ‘ _People’s House’_ mantra.”
Agbese debunked recent media reports alleging plans for a confrontation with the Speaker upon the House’s return from recess, calling them “speculative and a deliberate attempt to sow discord.”
He clarified that reported issues, such as staff recruitment in the National Assembly, were misrepresented, as these fall under the purview of the independent National Assembly Service Commission, not the Speaker.
“Attempts to drag the Speaker into matters outside his statutory control are unfortunate,” Agbese noted.
To address concerns, Abbas has established two special committees, one led by Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu and the other by former Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Idris Wase, demonstrating his responsiveness.
Agbese emphasized Abbas’ sacrifices, stating, “He has given up statutory benefits to accommodate first-term members in project and resource allocations, ensuring broader participation in leadership roles.”
Agbese recounted a personal anecdote, saying, “During a Christmas period, I led 13 stranded members to the Speaker, who promptly resolved their concerns about constituency support.”
He added, “No one can match his records. If given the chance, we would choose Abbas as Speaker again.”
Addressing broader issues, Agbese acknowledged challenges like underfunded constituency projects but stressed the leadership’s relentless efforts to resolve them.
“The Speaker feels our constituents’ pains and won’t rest until solutions are delivered,” he said.
Agbese reaffirmed the House’s focus on critical national priorities, including constitutional amendments, security, economic reforms, and budget implementation.
“Under Abbas, the House remains united and committed to delivering people-centered legislation,” he assured, urging the media to verify facts to avoid undermining the House’s unity and its relationship with Nigerians.
