Nigeria has finalised plans to host the 8th Nigeria–European Union Ministerial Dialogue in Abuja today, with discussions expected to focus on trade, security, and broader strategic ties between both partners.
The high-level meeting brings together senior officials from Nigeria and the European Union to review existing relations and deepen cooperation across key sectors vital to mutual growth and stability.
According to a statement signed by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigeria’s delegation will be led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, while the European Union team will be headed by Kaja Kallas, who arrived in Abuja on Sunday ahead of the talks.
As part of her visit, Kallas is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Tuggar to evaluate the current state of Nigeria–EU relations and identify new areas of cooperation, especially in sectors aligning with shared economic and political interests.
“During her visit, she will hold a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, aimed at reviewing Nigeria–EU relations and advancing cooperation across key sectors of mutual interest.”
“The visiting High Representative is also expected to pay a courtesy call on the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, as part of high-level engagements to further strengthen diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the European Union.”
The statement also notes that after the ministerial session, both parties will brief the media in a joint press conference where they are expected to outline key outcomes of the dialogue and highlight areas of increased collaboration.
The dialogue will act as a platform to strengthen engagement in trade and investment, security cooperation, governance, migration, climate action, and sustainable development, while reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to building a stronger and more forward-looking partnership with the European Union.
“The dialogue underscores the strong and evolving partnership between Nigeria and the European Union, anchored on shared values of multilateralism, mutual respect, and strategic cooperation.”
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterates Nigeria’s commitment to enhancing its partnership with the European Union and looks forward to a productive and forward-looking engagement.” The statement concludes.
