Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has thrown his weight behind former Commissioner for Works, Engr. Mustapha Gubio, as his preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship election, a move that is already stirring political activity within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The endorsement was confirmed on Tuesday by the governor’s spokesperson, Malam Dauda Iliya, who said Gubio possesses the capacity to consolidate ongoing projects and drive the next phase of development in the state.

Gubio’s political ambition gained further traction shortly after he secured the APC’s ₦50 million nomination form, formally signaling his entry into the race. He later paid a visit to Governor Zulum in Maiduguri, where the endorsement was reaffirmed.
Earlier in Abuja, Gubio was accompanied by Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno and several APC stakeholders from Borno State, underscoring growing support within influential party circles.

As the 2027 contest begins to take shape, endorsements have continued to roll in. The Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Borno State, Hon. Ali Umar Bolori, has publicly backed Gubio’s candidacy. He also called on party loyalists and residents to turn out in large numbers to welcome him at Maiduguri airport on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
With political alignments gradually forming, Zulum’s endorsement is expected to play a decisive role in shaping the APC’s internal dynamics ahead of what could become a highly competitive governorship race.
