Students of Ahmadu Bello University have brought honour to Nigeria after clinching three grand prizes at the 10th Huawei ICT Skills Competition Global Finals held in Shenzhen, China.
The competition, which took place from June 2 to 5, 2026, attracted 177 teams from 40 countries competing in the network, cloud, computing and AI/innovation categories.
At the award ceremony held in Shenzhen on June 5, the ABU contingent emerged among the best-performing teams globally, securing first position in the Cloud category, second position in the Computing category, and another grand prize in the highly competitive AI/Innovation track.
The university’s AI team, known as TeamABU2026, won global recognition with its innovative project, ParaVision, an artificial intelligence-powered diagnostic solution built on the Huawei Ascend 310B4 chip using the Orange Pi AIPro platform.
According to competition organisers, the AI/Innovation category was one of the highlights of the global finals, challenging participants to design and deploy practical AI solutions capable of addressing real-world problems through Huawei technologies.
The award-winning ParaVision system is capable of conducting multiple diagnostic tests simultaneously or independently while generating printed laboratory reports in less than three minutes.
The solution also features a multilingual interface supporting languages including French, Arabic, Chinese and Swahili, making it adaptable to diverse global environments.
In addition to the grand prizes, three members of TeamABU2026 were honoured with the prestigious Women in Tech Award alongside the Nigeria Network Team in recognition of their outstanding contributions to technology and innovation.
The students who represented the university were Kumba-Banna Tekanyi, Yakubu Musa Yakubu, Adekunle Abdulroqeeb Oladimeji, Wakili Sefiu Bolaji, Yunus Muhammad, Ruqayyah Hassan Labo, Khadija Khalid and Grace Temitayo Olorunfemi.
They competed under the guidance of Dr Bashir Halliru Sani of the Institute of Agricultural and ICT Innovation and Dr Zaharaddeen Haruna of the Department of Computer Engineering.
The Huawei ICT Competition began in October 2025 with more than 220,000 students from across the world.
Following successful outings at the national finals in December 2025 and the Southern Africa regional finals in March 2026, the ABU teams secured qualification for the global stage, where they ultimately emerged among the world’s top performers.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Adamu Ahmed, attended the event alongside the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof Raymond B. Bako, as well as other senior university officials, who witnessed the students’ historic achievement.
