Arsenal have wasted little time reminding their Premier League rivals that they are not prepared to give up their place at the top, opening the new season with a commanding 3-0 victory over Manchester City in Cardiff to lift the Community Shield.
The win delivered more than just another trophy for Mikel Arteta’s side. It was an early statement against one of their biggest title rivals and a warning that Arsenal intend to carry the confidence of last season into the new campaign.
The Gunners needed just 23 seconds to make that message clear.
Riccardo Calafiori finished off a move created by Myles Lewis-Skelly to put Arsenal ahead with one of the fastest goals ever scored in the Community Shield. City were immediately forced onto the back foot and struggled to recover their composure.
Arsenal doubled their advantage in the 28th minute when Kai Havertz rose to head home Christos Tzolis’ delivery. The Greek winger, one of Arsenal’s new additions, was proving a constant threat and remained involved after the break.
Just three minutes into the second half, Tzolis supplied another important contribution, setting up captain Martin Ødegaard to make it 3-0.
From there, Arsenal were in control.
City had opportunities to reduce the deficit, but Arsenal looked more organised and purposeful, with David Raya making the necessary saves when called upon. The contrast between the two sides was particularly striking as City struggled to produce the control and rhythm that had become a familiar feature of their football under Pep Guardiola.
For Arsenal, however, the afternoon was about more than beating City.
The Community Shield may not carry the weight of the Premier League or Champions League, but winning it against a major title rival gives Arteta’s squad an early psychological advantage. It also strengthens the belief that last season’s success was not a one-off.
That belief will be particularly important as Arsenal prepare to defend their Premier League crown while competing on multiple fronts.
The Gunners also showed encouraging signs from their new recruits. Tzolis played a direct role in two goals, while Bruno Guimarães made his competitive debut before being withdrawn at half-time.
City, meanwhile, have plenty to ponder.
The defeat was their first major competitive test of the new era following Guardiola’s departure, and the performance offered an early indication of how much work lies ahead for Enzo Maresca. Erling Haaland and several of City’s established names struggled to impose themselves as Arsenal’s intensity repeatedly disrupted their play.
The result also adds another piece of silverware to Arsenal’s growing collection. The victory takes their Community Shield tally to 18 outright triumphs, moving them further among the competition’s most successful clubs.
For City, it is an uncomfortable beginning to a new chapter. For Arsenal, it is the kind of result that can set the tone for an entire campaign.
The Premier League season is still ahead and the real battle for the title has yet to begin. But Arsenal have already made their intentions clear.
They are not simply returning to defend their crown. They are coming back expecting to fight for it.
