ARMSTRONG ALLAHMAGANI, Bauchi –

No fewer than 20 bills were passed by the Bauchi State House of Assembly in its first legislative year.

The Assembly also made 44 motions and 40 resolutions within the same period.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Abubakar Suleiman, revealed this on Tuesday in his speech after receiving the 2021 budget proposal by the Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed.

He said this was possible because the Lawmakers are more exposed based on the numerous seminars and workshops they attended.

“It is on record that in the course of our functions during the last legislative period, we have passed 20 bills, made 44 motions, 40 resolutions.

“We listened to 28 petitions and received 16 committee reports and 18 messages from the Governor.

“And for the first time in the History of the House, the Public Accounts Committee has invited so many MDAs with regards to the Annual Auditor General Reports,” he stated.

He added that: “According to the report I received, this is unprecedented in the history of the House and all these were achieved through robust interactions and diligent collaborations with the Executive, In Sha Allah in this legislative year, we will surpass it.”

Suleiman who expressed his appreciation of the Lawmakers to the Governor for “operating within the confines of the law” and to a greater extent facilitating the successful operation of the State House of Assembly urged him to keep it up.

According to him, the functions of the Executive and legislature arms of government are congruent but not watertight pointing out that “in this respect, we may agree and disagree with each other in some instances but that does not mean we are inimical to the growth and development of Bauchi State.”

The Speaker emphasized that: “We don’t have to fight to respect each other so long as we are operating within the provisions of separation of power.
“You know your bounds as Executive Governor and we respect our limitations as Legislators. Also, the inclusive nature of the Government makes it imperative to work together, as we are grateful for your usual involvement of the State Assembly in major policy formulations, that is why we, on several occasions support your policies and programmes despite our political differences.”
