Bauchi police record 414 criminal cases, arrest 673 suspects in 2023

Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, CP Auwal Muhammad, has said that 414 criminal cases recorded by the Command has led to the arrest of no fewer than 673 suspects from January 1st, 2023 to December, 2023.

CP Muhammad disclosed this while briefing journalists on the achievements of the Command in 2023 on Saturday at the Command’s Headquarters in Bauchi.

Muhammad said that because of the Command’s sustained operations, dedication, and commitment to secure the State and create a strong security sustainability framework, 41 cases alongside 59 suspects were successfully convicted, 365 cases with 613 suspect are standing trial, while eight cases are still under investigation.

He gave a breakdown of some of the cases as follows: “56 cases of armed robbery were recorded with 106 suspects arrested in connection with the cases; 57 cases of culpable homicide with 118 suspects arrested in connection to the cases. However, 57 victims were killed in connection with the culpable homicide cases.

“Seventeen cases of attempted culpable homicide with 23 suspects arrested in connection with the cases while 17 victims were injured; 73 cases of rape and indecent assault were recorded with 86 suspects arrested in connection with the cases while 31 victims were injured; 36 cases of kidnapping with 85 suspects arrested in connection with the cases, three unnatural offences with three suspects arrested in connection with the cases.

“Thirteen cases of theft/other stealing alongside 26 suspects were arrested in connection with the cases in which five cases were convicted while eight cases are standing trial; 72 cases of obtaining money/property by pretence/cheating were recorded with 81 suspects arrested in which 15 cases were successfully convicted and the remaining 50 cases are awaiting trial while seven cases are under investigation.

“Twelve cases of receiving stolen properties alongside 19 suspects were arrested of which four cases were convicted and the remaining eight are awaiting trial; two cases of illegal possession were recorded alongside four suspects arrested in connection with the cases, five cases of mischief by fire were recorded and arrested 11 suspects in connection with the cases.

“One case of forgery of counterfeit notes was recorded and arrested one suspect in connection with the case; four cases of breach of public peace were recorded with 14 suspects arrested in connection with the cases; 32 cases of other offences against persons with 42 suspects arrested in connection with the cases; 16 cases of other offences against property with 25 suspects arrested in connection with the cases, while seven cases of offences against firearms with 15 suspects arrested in connection with the cases.”

He said that over the last year, an estimated value of properties lost, stolen, or damaged amounted to about N62.89 million while the estimated value of properties recovered by the Command is N31 million.

According to Muhammad, exhibits recovered within the period include: 16 fabricated AK 47 riffle, 20 dane guns, 317 live ammunition caliber of AK-47 riffles, two Keke NAPEP, five Boxer motorcycles, eight vehicles, 70 cows and 60 sheep.

He said: “However, the Command wishes to delineate that, during several daring operations, rescued the total number of 127 kidnapped victims from the kidnapper’s enclaves, dismantled so many suspected kidnappers’ hideouts and neutralized about 20 as a result of gun duel,” he said.

The police boss said that some of the prominent cases recorded, included “a case of suspected ritualist where the command arrested two suspects namely; Abdulkadir Wada Haladu (19) of Chikamidari area of Jama’are LGA, Bauchi State and Adamu Abdulra’uf (20), all males of the same address; who cut off complete Vulva; (labia majora, labia minora, and clitoris) of an infant.

“After a thorough investigation by the Command, the two accused persons were charged to court for prosecution, and they were convicted and sentenced to 35 years imprisonment each without an option of a fine.

“In another development, the Command also succeeded in convicting a case of rape, where one Yusuf Bako, male, raped a minor girl in a mosque within Bauchi metropolitan. He was profiled and charged to court where he was sentenced to life imprisonment on 27th November, 2023.”

He expressed gratitude to the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, for doing all it takes to provide an enabling playing field for the Police to maintain law and order in the state as well as the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, who provided them with the moral and strategic support required for meticulous pragmatic policing to secure the lives and property of citizens.

He reassured them of the Command’s readiness to remain true to support their efforts for a secure and peaceful nation.

Muhammad urged members of the public to support the crime-free-state mission of the Command by refraining from any inhumane acts and also reporting any suspicious person(s) to the authority in the interest of Justice.

“It is pertinent to emphasize here that the aforementioned successes were made possible through intelligence availed to the Police from members of the public, who, as partners in progress with the Nigeria Police, share our desires and aspirations to enable a safe and secure environment for all citizens of the state. We must commend you for this and urge you to sustain the tempo. ‘Security is every man’s business,’ they say.

“The Command has put in place crime preventive measures which include visibility policing, community partnership, constant raids of black sports, regular foot, and vehicular patrols, surveillance on buildings and vulnerable areas, stop and search operations, and intelligence-led policing through a partnership with sister security agencies and other non-governmental organizations to nip in the bud, all forms of crime, criminals and their hideouts in the state.

“Finally, the Command is fully prepared and battle-ready for the year 2024 as more strategies will be put in place to ensure the security of life and property and consolidate the achievements recorded in the year 2023,” he stated.
