Building collapse: COREN urges Nigerians to seek professional services

The immediate past President of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) Engr. Ali Rabiu, has called  on Nigerians to always engage the services of professional engineers when building a structure.

 

Engr. Rabiu made the appealed during a paper presentation at the 2023 Engineering Week and Annual General Meeting organized by Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) in Jalingo, Taraba State over the weekend.

 

Engr. Rabiu, who double as the guest speaker, warned that engineering is not a general profession where every individual can fit in without proper training.

 

While noting that every building has its strength, capacity and age to serve, Engr Rabiu stressed that lack of qualify engineers engage for building a structure result in continuous collapse of building in the country.

 

“Instead of engaging a qualify engineers, they prefer to employed quack engineers for cutting corners which result to building collapse”, he said.

 

He further explained that engineering is a profession that is of knowledge and skills that is used to create and innovates product, system and processing that improved people’s lives and advance the society well-being.

 

He reiterated that, engineering is the only profession that involves continue learning from experience, and adopting challenges and improving on skills that can assist on national development.

 

Rabiu, who presented a paper on a topic: “Engineering Leadership For National Development” , disclosed that the engineering profession has played a crucial role for national development by providing solutions to energy, infrastructure, transportation, communication and health, among others.

 

Meanwhile, the National President, Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Engr. Tasiu Sa’ad Gidari Wudil stated that true leadership comes from influence, noting that leadership is about growth and to lead well is to influence your needs for continual improvement .

 

Tasiu, who was represented by National Vice President of NSE, Engr. Danladi Ushuki Adamu, said leaders can learn and multiply their influence by equipping others. He maintained that a trained engineer is equipped with all the necessary apparatus to provides good leadership and assist in decision making.

 

In his welcome speech, the Chairman of NSE Taraba State, Engr. Collins Awosika, stressed that the primary growth of a nation is directly from the area of infrastructural development, power, energy, agriculture, security, provision of tools, equipment and machineries which are very essential and belong to engineering practice.

 

Engr. Awosika explained that if the practice of engineering is giving adequate attention and well funded, the nation will experience tremendous economic growth and infrastructural development.

 

He applauded the Governor of Taraba State, Dr. Agbu Kefas for involving professional engineers into his leadership to head some very unique ministries, such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and Ministry of Energy and Economic Development.

 

He stated that NSE has contributed in supporting the development of Taraba State especially in the area of infrastructure, water supply, food security, technology and agriculture among others.
