Former AGF Abubakar Malami, his wife and son
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court of Nigeria in Abuja has granted bail to former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, his wife Asabe Bashir, and their son Abdulaziz Malami in an ongoing money laundering case.
In a ruling delivered on March 6, 2026, the court admitted each of the three defendants to bail in the sum of ₦200 million with strict conditions attached to ensure their appearance during the trial.
The decision followed a bail application filed after their re-arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The anti-graft agency has brought a 16-count charge against the defendants over alleged money laundering activities. The trio had earlier pleaded not guilty when they appeared in court on February 27, 2026.
As part of the bail conditions, the court directed each defendant to produce two sureties in the same sum of ₦200 million. One of the sureties must provide title documents to property located in either Maitama or Asokoro, two high-value districts in Abuja.
Justice Abdulmalik also ordered the defendants to surrender their international passports to the court registry. Until the bail requirements are fully satisfied, they are to remain in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
The court subsequently adjourned the case to March 16, 2026, for the commencement of trial.
