Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila
Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, revealed his lifelong admiration for the military, sharing that he pursued a legal career only after failing to join the armed forces due to physical requirements.
Speaking at the inauguration of the 1,200-seater Bola Tinubu Hall at Albalti Army Barracks in Surulere, Lagos, on Friday, Gbajabiamila described soldiers as “an inspiration” for their professionalism and sacrifices.
“I desperately wanted to be a soldier, but my weight or size didn’t meet the recruitment standards,” Gbajabiamila said, recalling his unsuccessful attempts to enlist.
“Looking at the candidates beside me, I knew it was time to go home. That’s when I became a lawyer.”
The auditorium, a project facilitated by Gbajabiamila, is designed to host training, social events, and other activities for military personnel.
He emphasized the Federal Government’s commitment to soldiers’ welfare, stating, “President Tinubu’s support for the military remains steadfast.”
Gbajabiamila also praised the military’s role in safeguarding Nigeria’s unity and democracy, noting that the new facility reflects appreciation for their nation-building efforts.
Vice Chairman of Surulere Local Government, Muiz Dosunmu, hailed the council’s strong ties with the barracks, which have spurred multiple projects.
“Surulere leads in development, education, sports, and health infrastructure,” Dosunmu said.
“We’re committed to doing more and ensuring no one is left behind.”
Director of Nigeria Army on Corps, Lt.-Col. Michael Toriola, lauded Gbajabiamila as a philanthropist whose contributions, including the auditorium, enhance the well-being of soldiers and their families.
“This hall is more than infrastructure—it symbolizes progress and pride in service,” Toriola remarked.
The event, attended by APC leaders like Desmond Elliot, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, underscored Gbajabiamila’s broader impact on Surulere, Lagos, and Nigeria.
