Kano State Government has revived the long-dormant State Traditional Council and selected the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, to head the body.
Governor Abba Yusuf announced the development on Monday during the formal inauguration of the council at the Government House, Kano. He explained that bringing the council back to life was part of his administration’s plan to strengthen cooperation among the emirates and reinforce governance at the grassroots.
According to him, the traditional institution plays a crucial role in community leadership and conflict resolution, and the emirates must work in unity to support the state’s overall development agenda. He urged the traditional rulers to “cooperate in advancing the state’s development objectives.”
In his acceptance remarks, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II expressed gratitude to the governor for restoring the council, describing it as a vital platform for constructive engagement between traditional leaders and the government.
He pledged that the council, under his leadership, would “work collectively and offer credible advice to improve the welfare of the people.”
Sanusi also commended the government for its prompt handling of recent security concerns in the state.
The reinstatement of the traditional council is expected to improve coordination between the emirates and the state administration, ultimately enhancing policy execution at the local level.
