The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is fast-tracking the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters to enhance its operational capabilities.
Director, Public Relations and Information, NAF, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja.
He said the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, led a high-level delegation to the United States for a Programme Management Review Meeting on the acquisition of the helicopters.
During the meeting, which held from June 9 to 13 in San Diego, California, the CAS inspected the AH-1Z helicopters and engaged with senior officers of the United States Marine Corps on best practices for operation, sustainment, and logistics support.
Abubakar expressed appreciation to the US Government for its strategic partnership and reaffirmed the NAF’s determination to expedite the procurement process.
“The acquisition of the AH-1Z Viper helicopters would significantly enhance the NAF’s combat effectiveness, operational efficiency, and mission readiness,” Abubakar said.
He added that every necessary step would be taken to facilitate a seamless procurement and integration process.
The CAS also reaffirmed the NAF’s commitment to the effective and responsible deployment of all acquired air assets in the fight against terrorists, bandits, and other criminal elements threatening the nation’s peace and stability.
Abubakar extended appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his continued support and strategic guidance, noting that the progress made in the AH-1Z acquisition project reflects the President’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.
