As part of activities marking the 2025 Plateau Social Media Day, young media professionals and aides to Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, have been charged to use their platforms to promote verified information and counter the growing tide of misinformation threatening peace and development.
The event, held to commemorate the Governor’s second year in office, featured civic engagements and inspection of key projects in Jos and Bukuru. However, it was the message on digital responsibility that resonated most.
Director General of the Plateau State Information and Communication Technology Development Agency (PICTDA), Engr. Dominic Datong Gwaman, urged young influencers to reject fake news and inflammatory content.
He stated “Today is a very wonderful day in the life of the social media personnel on the Plateau. One of the major things that is supposed to happen on social media is to tell the truth about things that are happening.
“Unfortunately, bad publicity is being provided on social media. Today, we are proud that a group of social media personnel are gathering to commemorate the two-year anniversary of Governor Mutfwang, celebrating all the projects that he has done.
“We really thank them for that feat. And we hope that other people who are using social media for the wrong reasons would learn from them.”
Engr. Gwaman stressed that with Plateau’s history of ethno-religious tension, positive digital engagement is crucial for building peace and trust.
Echoing the message, Executive Chairman of Jos North Local Government Council, Barrister J.K. Chris, commended the aides for aligning with the state’s vision of environmental renewal. He highlighted their participation in a sanitation exercise across Jos-Bukuru metropolis.
“Today, we witnessed a great awakening among the young people in Plateau State, especially the media aides who keyed into the vision of clearing our waterways, drainages, and refuse to combat the devastating effects of flooding.”
The celebration began with a novelty football match between Team Plateau State Executive and Team ALGON, symbolizing unity within the Mutfwang administration. The aides later toured major government projects, including the Tudun Wada–Kabong Road, Uton Kong–Abattoir Overhead Bridge, New JMDB Bukuru Market, and newly acquired Metro Buses.
Director General of the Plateau Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA), Mr. Samuel Dapiya, also applauded the young media aides and urged other youths to follow their lead.
“For me, this is the highest form of patriotism—that the media aides of the Executive Governor of Plateau State have identified the need to evacuate waste within the city center.
“It’s a call for every young person, irrespective of your political party or geography, to participate in environmental sanitation.” He emphasized.
First celebrated in 2022, Plateau Social Media Day was initiated to promote civic awareness, government accountability, and responsible digital engagement. The 2025 edition reinforced the role of young online voices in shaping a positive narrative for Plateau State.
