Four senators from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have announced their defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) during a plenary session in Abuja.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio read their individual defection letters on the floor of the chamber on Wednesday.
The defecting senators are Francis Fadahunsi and Olubiyi Fadeyi from Osun State, and Akon Samson and Aniekan Bassey from Akwa-Ibom State.
The event was attended by APC National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru, former Minister Chris Ngige, and several APC members from the House of Representatives, who were permitted to observe the proceedings.
This defection increases the APC’s Senate representation to 70 members, while the PDP’s count drops to 28. The Labour Party (LP) holds five seats, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has two, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has one, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) also has one. Two Senate seats remain vacant.
