Lawmakers at the House of Representatives
House of Representatives witnessed a wave of defections on Thursday as five members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Enugu State and one Labour Party (LP) lawmaker from Plateau State officially crossed over to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
During plenary, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen read the individual letters of defection, noting that the lawmakers attributed their decision to internal wrangling and divisions within their former parties.
Welcoming the new members, the Speaker said the APC remains a broad and inclusive platform.
> “Our party is large enough to accommodate everyone,” Tajudeen remarked.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Rep. Nnolim Nnaji—who represents Nkanu East/Nkanu West Federal Constituency of Enugu State—explained that their defection was driven by the desire to advance development in their constituencies.
> “This move is for the growth and progress of our state. We want to align with the central government to ensure Governor Peter Mbah continues to receive the needed support to perform effectively,” Nnaji said.
The Enugu lawmakers who defected from the PDP to the APC include:
Nnolim Nnaji (Nkanu East/Nkanu West Federal Constituency)
Martins Oke (Igbo Etiti/Uzo Uwani Federal Constituency)
Nnamdi Agbo (Igbo-Eze North/Udenu Federal Constituency)
Anayo Onwuegbu (Aninri/Agwu/Oji River Federal Constituency)
Chidi Obeta (Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency)
Additionally, Rep. Daniel Asama, representing Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency of Plateau State, also left the Labour Party to join the ruling APC, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The defections mark yet another political realignment as lawmakers position themselves closer to the federal government ahead of future political developments.
