Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Dr. George Akume, has called on the Tiv community in Taraba State to prioritize peaceful coexistence with their neighbors.
Akume made this appeal at the Traditional Chieftaincy Award ceremony for Dr. and Mrs. John Tor-Agbidye in Tor-Damisa, Donga Local Government Area of Taraba State.
Akume emphasized that development can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace.
He urged the Tiv community to maintain harmony with other communities in the state, stressing that unity and cooperation are essential for progress.
Akume, who was represented by Director of Administration in his office, Francis Kyenge, commended the Tiv community for honoring Dr. Tor-Agbidye, a renowned figure in medicine.
Dr. Tor-Agbidye was conferred with the traditional title of “Atakpa U Tiv,” meaning “medicinal cure of Tiv in Taraba,” while his wife was titled “Ityegh Ki Atakpa,” or “medicinal pot of Tiv in Taraba.”
These titles reflect their significant contributions to healthcare, particularly through Dr. Tor-Agbidye’s work as the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of In-Country Medicare, a cancer center. Senator Emmanuel Bwacha, the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in the 2023 election, praised Dr. Tor-Agbidye as an icon of scientific innovation and discovery.
Akume encouraged Dr. Tor-Agbidye to continue his selfless service to humanity and contributions to global medicine development. Dr. Tor-Agbidye, in response, thanked the Tiv leadership for the honor and pledged to support his kinsmen, upholding the confidence they have placed in him.
The Tiv community has faced challenges in maintaining peace with neighboring communities, particularly the Jukun community. However, efforts by traditional leaders and government officials, including Governor Agbu Kefas, have aimed to promote peaceful dialogue and cooperation. The goal is to create a harmonious environment that fosters development and unity among the diverse ethnic groups in Taraba State.
