Kano State Fire Service has reported the tragic drowning of four individuals in a blocked waterway in Zangon Kaya, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area.
The incident, which occurred on Friday afternoon, was detailed in a statement by Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, the Public Relations Officer of the State Fire Service.
According to Abdullahi, the agency received an emergency call at approximately 1:48 PM from Rabiu Yusif, reporting that four people had fallen into a waterway obstructed by accumulated debris due to nearby railway construction.
“Our rescue team was promptly dispatched to the scene,” Abdullahi said.
“Two of the victims had entered the waterway to swim and became trapped.”
He explained that a third person attempted to rescue the initial victims but also became stuck, followed by a fourth individual who entered the waterway to assist and met the same fate.
By the time the rescue team arrived, local residents had managed to retrieve two of the victims, while the fire service team recovered the remaining two.
The victims, identified as Bashir Sani (28), Nasirudden Tasi’u (25), Usman Ubale (26), and Yakubu Muhammed (22), were all rescued unconscious and later confirmed deceased.
Their bodies were handed over to SP Abdulkadir Albasu of the Dawanau Police Division.
Abdullahi attributed the tragedy to “local swimming in a blocked sewer,” highlighting the dangers posed by the obstructed waterway.
