A major Nigerian Air Force (NAF) operation in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State has claimed the life of Babangida, a feared bandits’ sub-commander and one of the closest aides of notorious kingpin Dogo Gideh.
Security sources told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Babangida succumbed to injuries on Nov. 18 after a targeted airstrike hit terrorists’ positions on the outskirts of Kurebe community, where “several fighters were neutralised.”
According to one of the sources, the loss of Babangida has dealt a significant blow to the Gideh faction, long linked to high-profile attacks across Niger and neighbouring states.
“His death has weakened the camp,” the source said, noting that the group’s internal structure had been rattled.
Intelligence reports, however, suggest that the recent abduction of schoolchildren in parts of Niger and Kebbi may have been carried out by loyalists attempting to “demonstrate capacity” after suffering repeated setbacks from sustained air and ground offensives.
NAN gathered that on Nov. 19, community leaders from Kwaki, Buresidna, Chukuba, Buwidna, Kuchidna, Banda, and Shalupe visited the Palleli residence of Gideh’s mother, who was seen mourning the death of her son’s trusted lieutenant.
A senior security officer, who spoke anonymously, described the operation as “a major success that has rattled the camp,” but cautioned that the group may attempt reprisals targeting civilians and security forces. He added that agencies have already been placed on high alert to foil any counterattacks and safeguard vulnerable communities.
Residents, according to him, have expressed cautious relief, seeing Babangida’s death as a potential turning point after years of relentless raids and violence.
At NAF Headquarters, sources confirmed the development and reaffirmed that offensive operations will continue, with a renewed focus on preventing retaliation and securing the rescue of abducted victims across affected states.
