Anger trailed midweek football fixtures after stunned bettors took to social media to complain about heavy losses and what many described as a frustrating betting glitch.
According to a trending summary on X, favourites delivered unexpected results — Real Madrid reportedly fell 4-2 to Benfica, Arsenal edged Kairat Almaty 3-2, while Liverpool cruised to a 6-0 win over Qarabag. The shock outcomes left many Nigerian bettors scrambling, with some claiming they were unable to access their betting slips for more than 90 minutes.
As reactions poured in on the platform, one influencer described the situation as a “gambling pandemic,” warning that it continues to drain both finances and mental health in a country where the betting market is estimated at about $1.64 billion and participation stands around 66 per cent of adults.
A physician also called for stronger anti-betting campaigns targeted at young people, though others argued that responsible wagering remains possible if punters use safeguards such as self-exclusion tools.
The trending note, however, emphasised that the story reflects a summary of posts on X and could evolve as more details emerge, underscoring the need for caution when relying solely on social media accounts of events.
