Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani
As the world commemorates World Water Day 2026, the Kaduna State Government has showcased notable strides in revitalising the water sector under Governor Uba Sani, with over 1.5 million residents benefiting from improved services.
The Commissioner for Information, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, said the administration’s reforms demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainable development and improved living standards across the state.
He noted that the government’s intervention in the sector is strategic and far-reaching, aimed not only at rehabilitating infrastructure but also at building a resilient, efficient, and people-oriented water system that guarantees safe and reliable access for citizens.
According to him, the Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (SURWASH) programme has significantly expanded access to potable water, improved sanitation, and enhanced hygiene practices, contributing to better public health and economic productivity.
Maiyaki further disclosed that since 2023, the state government declared a state of emergency in the water sector, accelerating reforms and infrastructure upgrades.
He listed key achievements to include the settlement of ₦900 million in salary arrears owed to Kaduna State Water Corporation workers and the procurement of 1,300 metric tonnes of water treatment chemicals valued at ₦1.5 billion, with an additional 3,500 metric tonnes in the pipeline.
He added that major water facilities in Kaduna, Zaria, Kafanchan, Kwoi, Manchok, and Kagoro have undergone rehabilitation under the SURWASH programme.
The Commissioner also revealed that water production capacity increased from 450 million litres per day (MLD) in 2023 to 530.66 MLD in 2025, while over ₦16 billion has been invested in the comprehensive rehabilitation of six major water treatment plants.
He said the government has equally expanded pipeline networks, constructed new reservoirs, and installed critical equipment to stabilise water supply across the state.
On institutional reforms, Maiyaki noted that the government has introduced automated billing systems, recovered ₦5.74 billion in counterpart funding for the Zaria Water Project, and commenced a review of the State Water Law to strengthen sector governance.
He reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Uba Sani to consolidating the gains recorded and ensuring equitable access to clean and safe water for all residents of Kaduna State.
