The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nasarawa State University, Keffi Dr. Samuel Alu has reiterated the need for the state government to take over the payment of university’s staff salaries in other to ensure the smooth running of academic activities.
Dr. Alu made the call on Thursday when a Non Governmental Organization- Nigerian Renaissance Forum in conjunction with Savanna Publishers presented to him a merit award as mark of honor for his excellent leadership qualities.
The ASUU chairman, who was excited over the recognition, also listed the achievements he has recorded to include the renovation and furnishing of the Secretariat with chairs, and refurbished the union bus to a better standard.
He noted that work has already commenced on the building of a perimeter fence round the secretariat, while work on the multi-pupose hall, a 20 room hotel and a restaurant has reached advance stage
The ASUU chairman expressed his determination to make the union great at the expiration of his tenure.
He commended the academic staff of the university for voting him and promised to work in harmony with the university’s authority for the over all growth of the institution.
“As a research institution will ensure that lecturers participate in national and international conferences to update their knowledge”, he said.
Earlier in his speech, the Executive Director of Savannah Group of Publishers, Mr. George Oreki told the gathering that members of the media had watched with keen interest the activities of the ASUU chairman and were impressed with his performance, hence the need to give him the award to spur him do more for the university.
He challenged those in leadership position to carry people along as shown by the ASUU chairman.
Highpoint of the event was the presentation of a giant plague of award to Dr. Alu as a mark of honor for his excellent leadership qualities in office.
