Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has firmly announced his intention to vie for Nigeria’s presidency in the 2027 election, dispelling rumors that he might step back from the race.
In a statement shared by his trusted aide and 2023 campaign spokesperson, Tunde Olusunle, during an interview with ThisDay on August 24, 2025, Atiku reaffirmed his commitment to lead Nigeria out of its current challenges.
Addressing speculations sparked by Prof. Ola Olateju of Achievers University, who suggested Atiku was more focused on national improvement than the presidency, Atiku clarified from his UAE holiday home that Olateju’s remarks were unauthorized.
“When representatives speak on my behalf, we align on my views beforehand. In this case, no such discussion occurred, and Prof. Olateju’s statements do not reflect my position,” Atiku stated.
Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in 2023, expressed dismay at Nigeria’s worsening state, emphasizing the need for urgent action. “I will contest in 2027.
Nigeria is in critical condition and requires decisive intervention to address the widespread poverty, suffering, and unacceptable decline,” he declared.
He further reassured supporters, promising that the coalition backing him would deliver a surprising outcome in 2027, despite attempts by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to undermine it.
Atiku condemned the current administration’s “unprecedented corruption” and lack of accountability, vowing to lead a movement to challenge the status quo. “The deceit, erosion of values, and rampant theft are alarming to every patriot. I am ready to lead the charge to rebuild our nation,” Olusunle quoted Atiku as saying.
Atiku also highlighted plans to mobilize Nigerians through the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to contest the 2027 election and restore the country’s trajectory.
