Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) has advised party leaders and members to exercise restraint in their remarks regarding individuals leaving the party.
Speaking at the 81st BoT meeting held on Thursday at the PDP national headquarters in Abuja, BoT Chairman Sen. Adolphus Wabara, represented by BoT Secretary Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, described the gathering as pivotal for revitalizing the party and building on the efforts of past leaders.
The meeting preceded the National Executive Committee (NEC) session.
Wabara emphasized the importance of unity and cautioned against actions or statements that could undermine the party’s rebuilding efforts. He expressed optimism that some defectors might return, urging members to avoid divisive rhetoric.
“Members should be mindful of their words and actions. While some work to strengthen the party, others must not weaken its image,” Wabara said. He clarified that personal opinions should not be mistaken for the party’s official stance, stressing that formal party organs are responsible for public statements.
Wabara further advised members to handle internal differences carefully and avoid disparaging remarks about defectors, as the goal is to encourage their return. He also called for unity in preparation for a successful party convention, noting that while not all defectors may rejoin, the PDP could attract new members.
In his opening remarks, acting National Chairman Umar Damagum described the PDP as the hope of Nigerians, urging members to remain proud and resilient. “The PDP stands for justice, democracy, and honor. Let us not allow emotions to cloud our judgment, especially now,” he said.
Damagum reiterated the party’s commitment to its founding principles and its role as a beacon of hope for the nation. (NAN)
