Senator Osita Izunaso
By EZEKIEL OBI, Abuja –
The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in Nigeria (COCSON) and National Association of Nigerian Youths Leaders (NANYL) have called on the leadership of the APC and the red chamber of the National Assembly to consider electing Senator Osita Izunaso as the next Senate President.
The National Secretary of COCSON Alh. Tijani Ali Danjuma and the National Secretary of NANYL Comrade Blessing Ogbogi both made the call while addressing newsmen on Saturday in Abuja.
They said with the emergence of President-elect, Bola Tinubu and Sen. Kashim Shettima from the South-West and North-East respectively, it is equitable for the leadership of the party to zone the position of the Senate Presidency to the South East Zone just as Nigeria had it when Obasanjo and Atiku were President/VP and Anyim, Nnamani were Senate President.
According to them, Sen. Izunaso is one of the most ranking senators from the south-east (Imo West Senatorial Zone) to succeed Senator Ahmed Lawan as the next president of the Senate in the 10th Assembly.
They said the endorsement of Senator Izunaso became necessary considering his vast knowledge in the political circle, courtesy of his “rich legislative experience, character, qualifications, prudence, accountability, loyalty”.
Senator Izunaso’s rich legislative experience, according to them will assist the APC led government to have a robust Executive-Legislative relationship to fast-track development.
“We therefore strongly appeal to the leadership of our great party, the All Progressive Congress (APC) and the Senators-elect to consider the need for a stable Leadership of the National Assembly which will not be in variance with the vision of the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu led government in delivering the democratic dividends to Nigerians who believe in the promise of hope and voted overwhelmingly for the All Progressive Congress”, the group said.
