Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani
Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani’s massive investment in the water sector is beginning to pay off, with the state recording a significant improvement in water supply over the past one month, the Commissioner for Public Works and Infrastructure, Arc. Ibrahim Hamza, has said.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Chief Press Secretary, the Commissioner noted that several parts of Kaduna metropolis and other major towns across the state are now enjoying increased and steady water supply, following the rehabilitation of key water facilities.
According to him, areas such as Tudun Wada, Malali, Unguwan Dosa, Doka Ward, Unguwan Rimi, Barnawa and Narayi have witnessed notable improvement in water supply since December.
Arc. Hamza explained that the rehabilitation of the Malali Water Works to optimal capacity has greatly boosted water availability in Kaduna metropolis, adding that supply would further improve once the Makera Water Treatment Plant is fully rehabilitated.
“Areas that have not received water for the past seven years are now experiencing water flowing from their taps, due to the renewed efforts of the Kaduna State Water Corporation (KADSWAC),” he said.
The Commissioner disclosed that both the 150 million litres per day (MLD) and 10 MLD Zaria Water Works are now fully operational, providing residents of Zaria and environs with steady water supply.
He added that major repairs have also been carried out at the Kafanchan Water Treatment Plant, restoring water supply to the town and surrounding local government areas.
He assured residents that boreholes would become unnecessary once all water treatment plants across the state are fully operational, as reliable pipe-borne water would be available.
Arc. Hamza commended Governor Uba Sani for declaring a state of emergency in the water sector in 2023, a move he said paved the way for massive investments, the clearance of salary arrears and the appointment of a competent Managing Director for KADSWAC.
He revealed that the state government plans to invest N93 billion over four years, in four tranches, to comprehensively rehabilitate the water sector and reverse over a decade of neglect.
“Governor Uba Sani first cleared outstanding salaries and wages of KADSWAC staff amounting to N800 million, restored the corporation to the state payroll, and settled electricity debts of N1.3 billion, he stated.
Kabir Rufai, a professional with over three decades of experience in the water sector, as substantive Managing Director,” the statement said.
The Commissioner added that the state has invested heavily in the rehabilitation and retrofitting of water treatment plants and distribution networks, with strong emphasis on sanitation and hygiene.
He called on residents to pay their water bills promptly, while urging KADSWAC staff to remain diligent and committed to sustaining improved service delivery across the state.
