LG polls: We didn’t support any political party in Cross River – Police
By PATRICK ABANG, Calabar –
Cross River State Police Command has denied supporting any political party in the just concluded Local Government election held on Saturday in the state.
The command, however, said it is aware of a video circulating online, showing the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of ‘B’ Division, Calabar, alleged to have supported a particular political party at a hotel within her area of responsibility during the Local Government Elections on 2nd November 2024.
The command’s spokeswoman, Irene Ugbo, who stated this in a statement on Monday in Calabar, said the matter is being investigated.
She said: “The Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Gyogon Augustine Grimah, PSC, FCAI, acknowledges and appreciates the citizens and relevant authorities for the peaceful conduct of the elections. The Command clarifies that the DPO was acting on credible intelligence regarding electoral materials allegedly diverted from the designated polling center at the Women Development Center, Calabar, to a hotel. The DPO, in response, led officers to recover and secure these materials, ensuring their safe transport to the appropriate voting location.
“In response to the concerns raised, the CP has ordered a thorough investigation to address the allegations.
“The Command urges the public to remain calm as findings will be communicated transparently upon conclusion. The Police Command remains steadfast in upholding law and order with the highest standards.
“Furthermore, the Command urges anyone with clear evidence on the allegation to come in aid of our investigation, please.
