Kaduna State Government has signalled plans to strengthen safety standards around the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) following a technical incident involving a commercial bus at Mando Motor Park.
The government said preliminary findings indicated that the incident, which occurred in the early hours of April 5, involved a CNG-powered bus operated by Silver Luxury Travel and was caused by overfilling, leading to a minor explosion.
Commissioner for Information and Culture, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, who disclosed this in a statement, clarified that the incident was not security-related, stressing that no lives were lost and no property was damaged.
He noted that the development has prompted the state government to take proactive measures aimed at preventing a recurrence, including a comprehensive review of operational and safety compliance among CNG operators.
Governor Uba Sani has consequently directed a multi-agency probe involving security agencies, regulators, and safety authorities to not only determine the cause of the incident but also recommend stricter enforcement mechanisms for CNG usage across the state.
The government said the move is part of broader efforts to ensure the safe adoption of alternative energy sources in the transport sector without compromising public safety.
Maiyaki also commended the swift intervention of the Kaduna State Police Command, particularly the Bomb Disposal Unit, for promptly securing the scene and averting panic.
He urged residents to remain calm and rely on official channels for information, assuring that the government remains committed to safeguarding lives and property while enhancing safety standards in emerging energy technologies.
