National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert warning Nigerians about the circulation of unregistered and suspected counterfeit toothpaste products discovered in Kaduna State.
In Public Alert No. 022/2026, the agency disclosed that the suspicious products, branded as Coglaet ActivGel 100g and Coglaet Herbal 100g, were discovered during a post-marketing surveillance operation following a complaint about their distribution.
NAFDAC stated that “the Post-Marketing Surveillance (PMS) Directorate received a complaint about the distribution of an unregistered and suspected counterfeit Colgate toothpaste in Kaduna State.”
Following the report, a team of PMS officers visited the outlet where the products were allegedly being sold and discovered the two suspected counterfeit toothpaste brands on display.
According to the agency, “upon investigation, a team of PMS officers visited the outlet where the product was being sold. They discovered two suspected unregistered and counterfeit Colgate toothpaste products, branded as Coglaet ActivGel 100g and Coglaet Herbal 100g, available for sale.”
The shop owner reportedly informed the team that the products were purchased from a door-to-door sales representative but failed to provide any proof of purchase.
NAFDAC warned that the products had not undergone regulatory approval and could pose potential health risks to consumers.
The agency stated, “these products have not met the required regulatory standards for registration and quality assurance, thereby posing a potential risk to public health and safety.”
The suspected counterfeit products were subsequently removed from circulation, while investigations are ongoing to identify and track those responsible for their distribution.
NAFDAC further disclosed that all zonal directors and state coordinators have been directed to intensify surveillance and remove the counterfeit products wherever they are found.
The agency stated that “all NAFDAC zonal directors and state coordinators have been instructed to conduct surveillance and mop up the unregistered and counterfeited products if found within their zones and states.”
NAFDAC urged distributors, retailers and consumers to remain vigilant to prevent the spread of counterfeit products across the supply chain.
According to the agency, “distributors, retailers, and consumers are hereby advised to exercise caution and vigilance within the supply chain to avoid the distribution, sale, and use of counterfeit products.”
Consumers were also encouraged to verify the authenticity and physical condition of products before purchase or use.
NAFDAC reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public health and urged Nigerians to remain cautious when purchasing regulated products, particularly those sold through informal distribution channels.
