National President of Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Audu Amba has condemned the violent outbreak of a political rally allegedly organized by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, at one of its edifice in Kaduna.
He made it known while addressing Journalists in Kaduna, that while El-Rufai and his group are about to inaugurate a committee of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) thugs disrupted the gathering.
Comrade Amba, expressed regret over the incident, stating that the union would not have granted approval for the meeting if they had known about it earlier.
According to Amba, the meeting degenerated into violence and sporadic gunshots, disrupting public peace and order in the state.
The police have launched an investigation into the incident, warning that anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law, regardless of their position.
Amba highlighted the union’s grievances against El-Rufai, citing his government’s actions during his tenure as governor, saying the administration initiated a verification exercise that led to the death of many teachers in a bomb blast and thousands being sacked without receiving their entitlements.
“Many workers, including teachers, missed their salaries for months or even a year.
“El-Rufai’s government scrapped the END Well scheme, which was established to support teachers in times of need or after retirement”, he stated.
The NUT national president expressed disappointment that El-Rufai would use the NUT hotel, a property owned by teachers, to host a meeting for opposition parties.
“If teachers were aware El-Rufai would have a meeting there, they would not have allowed him access to their property,” Amba stated.
The NUT has distanced itself from the incident, and the police have suspended all unauthorized political gatherings in the state until proper security arrangements are made. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
