Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has gifted N20 million to the University of Calabar’s (UNICAL) Dentistry Department to enhance student training and resources.
The donation, presented on Friday in Calabar with dentistry students in attendance, is earmarked for acquiring five new dental chairs
Obi emphasized that his focus is on fostering development, not politicking.
“This N20 million will equip the department with essential tools like dental chairs,” he said.
“We cannot justify spending millions on politicians’ cars while our youth lack the resources to learn.”
Obi criticized the disparity between lavish political spending and underfunded education, stating, “Our schools need laboratories, classrooms, and chairs, not politicians living like celebrities. We must prioritize measurable progress in education, health, and poverty alleviation.”
He stressed that governance should uplift the masses, particularly enabling opportunities for the underprivileged.
“I’m committed to building a society where the child of a nobody can become somebody,” he added.
Dismissing early talk of the 2027 elections, Obi urged leaders to address urgent issues like hunger, education access, and healthcare.
“Instead of discussing 2027, we should focus on Nigerians struggling to eat, educate their children, or get proper medical care,” he said.
However, he affirmed his future political ambitions, noting, “As for 2027, I’ll be there, and I will contest.
