One killed, 64 houses destroyed, many injured in Bauchi communal clash

Many houses, 3 motorcycles and properties worth millions of naira were set ablaze during the clash.

The Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed that one person was killed during a communal clash in Sang village of Bogoro Local Government Area of Bauchi State, over the coronation of a Hamlet head.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakil, a Superintendent of Police, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday afternoon, said many people, including a 65-year old, sustained various degrees of injuries during the incident which happened on Saturday at about 7.00pm.

He said that 64 houses, three motorcycles and properties worth millions of Naira were set ablaze.

According to him, immediately the Command received information of the unrest, its operatives comprising Tactical teams, Rapid Response Squad and Operation Restore Peace, were deployed to the area to maintain law and order.

He said that the Commissioner of Police in the State, Aminu Alhassan, has ordered for an immediate investigation to unravel the remote cause of the crisis.

Wakil said that relative peace has returned to the area adding that the CP has appealed for calm from residents of the area.

“On 15/04/2023 at about 1900hrs (7.00pm), the Bauchi State Police Command received a distress call over ongoing skirmishes in the Bogoro area of the State.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that the communal clash in Sang village of Bogoro LGA emanated from the coronation of the Hamlet Head of Sang.

“Some irate youth with different functions protested against the coronation. Consequently, this resulted in an attack on innocent citizens, as the irate youths set 64 houses, three motorcycles and properties worth millions of Naira ablaze.

“One person by the name of Apollos Danlami, 70 years old, was killed in the incident while a certain Naemiya Bature, 65 years of age, and some other people were injured in the fracas.

“The Command deployed Police operatives comprising Tactical teams, Rapid Response Squad and Operation Restore Peace swiftly responded to the distress call and their effort brought the situation under control,” he said.

He added that: “The area is relatively peaceful for now, and security measures have been reinforced in and around Bogoro LGA as the safety of the citizens remains the highest priority of the Command while a work round-the-clock to keep arm at bay. Also, visibility Patrol is ongoing to maintain public peace and order.

“The CP has directed the DPO Bogoro to commence a discrete investigation in earnest to unravel the circumstances that led to this turmoil.

“Furthermore, concerted efforts have been intensified in a bid to arrest the perpetrators of this dastardly act to face the full wrath of the law. Further development will be communicated as the investigation unfolds.”
