Russia is optimistic that the upcoming summit between President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska could pave the way for improved diplomatic ties and address key bilateral issues.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov expressed confidence that the meeting could serve as a catalyst for normalizing relations, stating, “We hope that the forthcoming high-level meeting will give an impulse to the normalisation of bilateral relations, which will allow us to move forward on such issues as restoring air links.”
The summit, set for Friday, was described by Trump as a “feel-out meeting,” suggesting an exploratory approach to discussions. Meanwhile, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov highlighted the strategic choice of Alaska as the venue, noting, “The region is where the economic interests of both countries intersect,” underscoring its significance for both nations.
