University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has named its new convocation arena after the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, in recognition of his contributions to the institution.
The arena was officially commissioned on Saturday by retired Vice Adm. Ibok-Ete Ibas, Sole Administrator of Rivers State, during UNIPORT’s 35th Combined Convocation and 50th Anniversary celebrations.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, noted that the university’s first convocation in 1982 took place in an older facility.
“Today, as we mark our 50th year, we celebrate our 35th convocation in this remarkable arena, constructed under Wike’s leadership as Rivers State Governor,” he said.
Ibas praised Wike’s role in advancing the university’s infrastructure, describing the arena as a symbol of his commitment to education and development.
“This modern facility reflects a vision brought to life through dedication. It’s more than a convocation venue—it’s a space where academic achievements are celebrated, future leaders are honored, and innovation and policy discussions will thrive,” Ibas remarked.
He added that the arena represents a link between UNIPORT’s legacy of excellence and its future aspirations.
Wike, who was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Political Science (D.Sc Honoris Causa), expressed deep gratitude for the recognition.
“My family and I are profoundly honored by this gesture,” he said, noting that UNIPORT provided him with the intellectual and moral foundation for his career in politics and socio-economic development.
He urged alumni to give back to the institution, stating, “My contributions to UNIPORT stem from a heartfelt sense of gratitude for what this university gave me.”
Other distinguished individuals honored with honorary doctorate degrees included First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, and Aminu Masari, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.
