Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni
In a major step toward strengthening food security, Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has launched the distribution of 50,000 bags of assorted grains to vulnerable residents across the state.
At the official flag-off ceremony held Monday in Damaturu, Governor Buni emphasized that the intervention aligns with the state government’s commitment to boosting food resilience and supporting communities recovering from recent natural disasters.
“This is in line with the government’s vision and mission of food security and resilience building for efficient and effective recovery from natural disasters such as this year’s floods which claimed some lives and properties,” the governor stated.
He extended condolences on behalf of the state government to families affected by the floods, acknowledging the hardship faced during the lean period between planting and harvest.
“Government is conscious of challenges posed by calamities, and difficulties that usually accompany the farming circle between planting and harvesting seasons, when farmers have invested and exhausted their food stock, while the new crops are not ready for harvest,” he added.
Each beneficiary will receive a 50kg bag of either rice, sorghum, or millet.
Breakdown of the distribution includes:
- 5,580 primary school teachers
- 1,780 workers in Primary Healthcare Centres
- 2,400 persons with special needs
- 1,200 Tsangaya Mallams
- 2,000 junior civil servants
- 2,000 tertiary institution staff
- 600 hospital staff
- 25,500 vulnerable individuals across the 17 LGAs
Buni reiterated his administration’s commitment to expanding agricultural investments, aiming not only for food sufficiency but also for contributing significantly to national food stability.
He applauded President Bola Tinubu for impactful projects in the state and commended the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for its prompt action in procuring and mobilizing the grains.
The governor called on distribution officials to ensure transparency and fairness in reaching only the intended beneficiaries.
“Those saddled with the responsibility of distributing the grains must ensure that only targeted individuals benefit from the gesture,” Buni charged.
