Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has refuted claims that Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, urged Nigerians to carry firearms.
In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, clarified the CDS’s remarks from an August 20 television interview, which had been misinterpreted.
Brig.-Gen. Gusau emphasized that Gen. Musa advocated for citizens to acquire basic self-protection and survival skills, comparing them to practical abilities like driving, swimming, or practicing martial arts such as taekwondo, judo, and boxing.
“The CDS did not call for unlawful possession of firearms.
“He is fully aware of Nigerian laws prohibiting unauthorized carrying of weapons,” Gusau stated, adding that the CDS’s comments were intended to foster “resilience, situational awareness, and lawful preparedness.”
The DHQ, further, reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment, alongside other security agencies, to combating insecurity nationwide.
Gusau highlighted ongoing successes, noting that these efforts demonstrate the government’s dedication to protecting lives and maintaining peace and stability across Nigeria.
