Two people have been sentenced to death by hanging for murder in Bauchi State, the Commissioner of Justice and Attorney-General, Yakubu Kirfi, has disclosed.
He explained that one of the convicts, Umaru Jauro, was sentenced to death by hanging for culpable homicide by the Bauchi High Court number 5.
He said that the other person whose name he gave simply as Jaridu was also sentenced to death by hanging by a Bauchi High Court for killing his biological daughter.
The Commissioner who spoke at an event in Bauchi recently, further disclosed that one Shamsuddeen Umar who was convicted for rape was sentenced to life imprisonment.
He added that one Dantala Hussaini who also convicted for rape was sentenced to serve a prison term of eight consecutive years.
According to Kirfi, Suleiman Dawa convicted for armed robbery and Abdullahi Sani, convicted for attempted rape were sentenced to 10 years and seven years accordingly jail terms respectively.
Another accused, Mohammed Musa, he stated, who was discharged for armed robbery, had his judgment upturned by Jos division of the Appeal Court.
The Attorney-General said that Governor Bala Mohammed in the year 2020, pardoned 106 prison inmates, including the payment of their fines under the Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy to decongest the custodial centres across the state.
He further revealed that Department of Civil Litigation of his ministry last year recorded 164 cases explaining that some of them.
According to him, 35 cases were at the Court of Appeal, 30 at the National Industrial Court, 32 cases were disposed at the High Court of Justice while some were still pending.
Kirfi stated that the Directorate of Public Prosecution of the Ministry received a total of 414 cases comprising of 63 armed robbery and possession of fire arms, 82 for culpable homicide, 31 for rape, 21 for terrorism, kidnapping and related offences, while 217 were for minor offences.
He explained that out of the 414 cases, 220 were disposed, 133 pending in various courts, 15 cases on appeal while 46 were awaiting legal advice from the ministry.
