Ebonyi State Commissioner for Environment, Chief Victor Chukwu, has condemned the misuse of newly constructed bus stops in Abakaliki, vowing to commensurate disciplinary action on anyone caught using the facilities as public toilets.
He emphasised that the bus stops are meant to serve as shelters for commuters, especially in the period of unfriendly weather and not for unsanitary behaviour.
Chukwu acknowledged residents’ unavoidable call of nature but insisted that public defecation and urination are unacceptable. He implored people to make use of private or existing facilities until public toilets are constructed; maintaining that plans are already underway to install such amenities at strategic points in the capital.
The Commissioner cautioned contraveners of environmental laws as they would be made to face strict penalties if continued in their misdemeanour. He further stressed the government’s zero-tolerance on infrastructure abuse.
The Environment boss commended the state’s waste management in their commitment to sanitary order of the state, noting the daily waste collection by 24 contractors across 24 zones and the effective operation of a state recycling plant. The plant, which converts waste into reusable materials like nylon and plastics, is also exploring bioenergy options.
Chief Chukwu reassured the state government’s dedication to urban sanitation and urged the residents to support the efforts to keep the city clean.
