A fatal accident caused by reckless overtaking has claimed six lives along the Enugu–Abakaliki highway, near the Nkalagu flyover in Ebonyi State.
Confirming the incident, Anthony Ogbodo, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ebonyi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday that the crash occurred on Friday and involved a commercial Toyota Hiace bus and a heavy-duty articulated vehicle.
“A total of 22 persons were involved—12 males and 10 females,” Ogbodo stated. “Unfortunately, six people lost their lives: three males and three females. Fourteen others—nine males and five females—sustained varying degrees of injury.”
He added that two male passengers walked away from the crash without injury. The injured victims were rushed to multiple hospitals for treatment, including Annunciation Hospital and the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Enugu. Others were taken to the General Hospital in Ezzamgbo by Red Cross personnel.
In the aftermath of the crash, FRSC officials cleared the road and recovered personal belongings from the scene, including two mobile phones, a vehicle key, and ₦2,000 in cash, according to NAN reports.
Ogbodo used the opportunity to caution motorists against dangerous driving practices. “We continue to urge all road users to respect traffic rules. Overtaking carelessly endangers not just the driver but everyone on the road,” he warned.
He stressed that with greater adherence to safety regulations, tragic incidents like this can be avoided.
