Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is taking significant steps to tackle smuggling activities along its borders.
Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, revealed that the NCS has developed a technology to manage transporting between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin, which is currently being piloted at the Seme-Krake border.
He said this technology, once successfully piloted, will be deployed along the borders to drastically reduce smuggling.
Adeniyi emphasized the robust relationship between Nigeria and Benin Republic, citing joint task forces and intelligence exchange between the two countries.
“We have a robust relationship with border countries,” he said on Wednesday during a working visit to Ogun 11 Area Command in Abeokuta.
“By the time we finish the piloting, once it is successful, we are going to deploy it along the borders, it will help us to reduce smuggling”.
The NCS has also fostered cordial relationships with border communities, leveraging their knowledge of the terrain and intelligence to inform operations.
Adeniyi noted that all customs commands around the borders are encouraged to have structures in place to relate to members of the community, promoting cooperation and effective border management.
This development is part of the NCS’s broader efforts to strengthen border security and combat smuggling using advanced technology.
The service has already taken steps towards automating various aspects of its operations, including the acquisition of an aircraft for border patrol.
