Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe state has awarded a N2.6 billion contract for the construction of Nguru Ultra Modern Market.
Yobe State Commissioner of Commerce,, Tourism and Industry, Alhaji Barma Shettima, disclosed Friday during the signing ceremony of the contract in his office in Damaturu on behalf of the State Government.
Shettima added that the contract was awarded to the highest bidder, ADAF BML Company Limited, with a completion term of 12 months.
According to him, when completed the market would increase the locally generated revenue of the state.
He pointed out that the market will have modern facilities, including fire service outpost, parking space, toilets, lock up shops and stalls as well as motor park among others.
It would be revealed that in the past, the market was gulted by unknown source of fire outbreak which has become an annual event that claimed many lives and property worth millions of naira.
The Commissioner, however, explained that some people attributed the annual fire outbreak at the market to “evil spirits” that do set some items on fire over night.
He said, “Fire fighters and the police could not even identify the causes of the previous fire outbreaks that annually affect the Nguru Market”.
“I therefore urge the contractor to adhere and comply with the terms of reference of the contract as well as the Market building specifications to international standards.
“You should maintain all the quality building materials detailed in the master plan of the building, as contain in the project’ terms of agreements.”Shettima said.
He added that the completion of the Nguru ultra modern mark,et will reactivate the state’s economy through trade, tourism and create job opportunities for the teeming unemployed youths, thereby addressing the menace of unemployment and boosting revenue generation of the state.
