General Officer Commanding (GOC), 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Bemgha Koughna, has reiterated the importance of strong collaboration between the military and the media in promoting security and sustaining public trust.
Koughna said the media plays a critical role in informing, educating, and shaping public perception of security operations, stressing that responsible and verified reporting remains essential.
According to him, journalists help set the agenda and influence public understanding, which makes accuracy and professionalism indispensable in security-related coverage.
He urged media practitioners to always confirm information with relevant authorities before publication, noting that timely and factual reporting is vital in countering misinformation and preserving peace in society.
The GOC made these remarks while receiving members of the Sokoto State Correspondents’ Chapel during a courtesy visit to the 8 Division Headquarters in Sokoto.
He explained that he had intended to host members of the media shortly after assuming office but was constrained by official engagements.
“I want to assure you that this Division, under my watch, is ready to have strong collaboration with journalists, especially the Correspondents’ Chapel.”
Major General Koughna further assured that the 8 Division remains committed to maintaining open communication channels and fostering a professional working relationship with journalists across the state.
He emphasized that transparency and mutual respect between the military and the media would enhance public confidence in security operations.
Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Ankeli Emmanuel, congratulated the GOC on his appointment and pledged the continued support of journalists operating in Sokoto.
He said members of the chapel, who report for national and international media platforms, are prepared to work closely with the Division to promote peace and security.
Ankeli also advised journalists to deny criminals and enemies of the nation undue publicity, noting that highlighting their activities often gives them the attention they seek.
According to him, Nigerians, regardless of religion, creed, or affiliation, should continue to pray for and appreciate security personnel for their sacrifices, stressing that they remain vigilant so that others can live in peace.
He further called for stronger civil-military relations, adding that seamless communication between journalists and the army is crucial for balanced, accurate, and responsible reportage of security activities.
