ANIEFIOK UDONQUAK, Uyo –
In an effort to alleviate poverty and foster self-reliance through agriculture engagement, Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State has launched a specialized training on snail farming targeted at indigent residents.
The training which took place at the Council Secretariat, drew participation from youths and women across the local government area, and marks another milestone in the administration’s commitment to people-focused governance and grassroots economic transformation.
Speaking during the flag off ceremony, the LG Council chairman, Kufre Umoren, represented by the Council Secretary, Mfon Akpabio, described the initiative as a strategic move to promote agricultural entrepreneurship and create sustainable income for the people.
“This initiative is part of our continuous effort to uplift the economic status of our people. Snail farming may appear minor, but its profitability is considerable. We encourage every participant to take this seriously and make the most of the opportunity,” the Chairman stated.
Echoing the sentiment, the Supervisor for Agriculture, Owoidoho Ntia, commended the Council Boss for his foresight in promoting grassroots agricultural empowerment.
Also speaking, the training facilitator, Mr. Morris Emmanuel, an agricultural consultant and snail farming expert, expressed appreciation to the Council Chairman for the opportunity to contribute to rural economic development.
“Snails are a delicacy with high demand, both locally and abroad. One mature snail can sell for between ₦500 to ₦1000. Rearing even 500 snails can become a small fortune. This is a venture with real financial potential,” Mr. Emmanuel explained.
He also assured that the training would be hands-on and comprehensive, covering modules such as habitat creation, feeding techniques, disease prevention, harvesting and marketing.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Nsikak Udoh thanked the council chairman for the rare opportunity, promising that the skills gained will be put to good use.
In attendance at the event were Supervisor for Women Affairs and Community Development, Patience Bassey, and Supervisor for ICT.
