The Student Union Government (SUG) of Bayero University, Kano has inducted the Director of Public Affairs (DPA), National Universities Commission (NUC), Mal, Ibrahim Yakasai into the institution Hall of Fame.
In a ceremony at the NUC, the President of the SUG, Comrade Garba Sa’id disclosed that the choice of Yakasai was in recognition of his immense contributions towards social development of youth and student empowerment, diligence and sincere service to the nation.
Sa’id stated that the SUG in BUK has developed programmes for the intellectual and character development of the student which required the assistance and financial support from well-meaning individuals to be actualized.
He listed some of the programmes to include; transportation, campus shuttle, construction of student common room, student market and loans for indigent students to enable them pay school fees.
Also speaking, the SUG Secretary General, Naf’u Danlami said that the union was fighting social vices on campus like drug abuse, sexual harassment, rape and campus violence.
In his response, Mal. Yakasai said he was humbled and thanked the leadership of the SUG for finding worthy to be honoured and took it as a challenge to do more.
He added that he was happy that the award came from his alma mater and that he was pleased with the maturity of the leadership of the SUG
According to him, the Executive Secretary NUC, Abubakar Rasheed who was unavoidably absent, would be fully briefed of the development and stressed that he would continue to assist the SUG along with friends and associates.
In his remark, a visiting Professor in the commission and an alumnus of BUK, Prof Abubakar Alkali said that he was sentimental about his alma mater and recalled how he chose the institution as a prospective candidate as it was the “hottest choice around at the time”.
He described BUK as the spiritual headquarters of student unionism in the country adding that it produced academic giants and leaders like the ESs of NUC, Abubakar Rasheed and Prof Munzali Jubril and countless numbers of other giants in various field of human endeavours due to its excellence.
